A Day in the Life of a Literary Agent
Out there lies talent, it just has to be found! “The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.” – Émile Zola Hi Everyone, I’d talked with Alex a few months ago about writing a blog post for my website and he not only agreed but wrote an outstanding and informative piece. I hope you enjoy! (Can you see the Tiger’s Curse books on his shelf?) Colleen Introducing. . . Alex Glass A Day in the Life of a Literary Agent “Most literary agents—most people who work in book publishing, for that matter—got …
The Radish Club
What is? Introducing The Radish Club, by Colleen Houck. (Article originally published in 2010) Today I wanted to talk about radishes. Some of the critics of my books think Kelsey is suffering from a low self-esteem problem. First of all, I believe 98% of girls suffer from self-esteem issues at one time or another in their lives. I think its a normal problem. But that’s not what I want to talk about. I worked on a salad bar for several years during my young adult years. I made seafood salad, chopped cases of fruit, made spinach, bacon, and red …
LADY IN WHITE, FOREVER TRAPPED
A DEEPER LOOK INTO THE MYTH BEHIND LADY SILKWORM I stand neither in your world nor the other, but in the fold in between. To see me wandering the woods, among mulberry trees, Stone walls veil my face and I am hidden from all. Poisoned am I with human hope, Only to glimpse love through the threads I weave. ~My interpretation of Lady Silkworm Houck’s brilliant imagination captures many exciting (and usually tragic) mythological stories, twists them up and pours them into her books. In TIGER’S VOYAGE, she explores the legend of Lady Silkworm (or Horse-headed Lady) found in …

Sunken Cities- Houck’s Inspiration for TIGER’S VOYAGE
ARTICLE FEATURING- MAHABALIPURAM & THE CITY OF THE SEVEN PAGODAS I first came across the story of Mahabalipuram and the City of the Seven Pagodas when I was researching sunken cities for Tiger’s Voyage. The whole story of a jealous Indian god sinking six of the temples in a storm while leaving one lone temple behind was fascinating to me and I knew I wanted to add that myth into my book. Layering real historical events and places mixed together with fantasy elements is something that I really appreciate in novels. It’s fun to imagine a special site that …
INTRODUCING- THE MODERN INK SOCIETY
GUEST POST: STACEY KADE- ON THE SUBJECT OF ALIENS As many of you already know, Colleen recently started her very own Houck Book Club, a place where we could virtually meet to read a featured book each month and then discuss it together on Goodreads. Since then, Colleen has decided to offer her fans something more! She is starting a writer’s club called THE MODERN INK SOCIETY! Once a month, she will invite a guest to write an article, something unique and special to them and post it here on her website. To kick things off, she’s chosen Stacey Kade, …
Happy Valentine’s Day
Roses are red, violets are blue . . . we’ve all heard and most likely written one or two of these poems for a past valentine. Since most of you may be busy celebrating with your friends and loved ones today, I’d like to keep this post simple, sickly sweet, and utterly romantic! For those of you who love romance, I thought we could refresh our minds to that special night when Ren asked Kelsey out for their first Valentines date ever (from Tiger’s Quest). Leading up to this romantically unparalleled Valentines date, Ren and Kelsey were officially and …
The meaning and Beauty of the Veil
The lady shadowed in veil Consider the white veiling of the bride or the black veil in mourning, a nun who takes on the veil or a woman disguising her identity for secret purposes, or even that of a religious woman concealed in veils of various designs and colors. Throughout history, the veil has held reverent symbolism and status. It seems as though the tradition of veils stems from the ancient European cultures (Hittites, Greeks, Romans and Persians) and was associated with circumstance and position. The earliest recorded instance of women wearing veils is found in the 13th century BC. …
