“I took hold of that scourge -filled ship and crushed it between my limbs, hurtling it into the second sun, the red one that gave me strength. But I was too late." Terraformer
As a teenager all I wanted for my skin to be free of acne. As a 20 year old I still wanted to be acne free, but I knew I also needed sunscreen in my daily face moisturizer since I live in the sunny desert. I tried several products until I found the right one for me, and then I learn more about what should I do during my early 20’s. But I failed to follow, and it continues to open more acne and breakouts. When I reached my 30’s I was sure that the little breakouts would surely stop anytime now, I wanted my skin to be soft, and I wanted to start erasing those little lines already starting to sink into my outer eye. Now I’m 40. I want everything, including an eradication of those monthly breakouts, ironing out fine lines around my eyes and on my forehead before they turn into crevices, SPF as high as possible to keep more dark spots from nesting on my face, and to be soft and touchable. Actually sometimes I think, is there really a way on How to tighten vagina like what I have heard from my friends? Just a funny random thought.
I’m religious about skin care and using sunscreen especially after my husband was diagnosed with the most curable type of cancer out there, skin cancer, specifically Basal Cell. He never wore sunscreen, and he loves being outdoors climbing mountains, playing soccer, and hiking. As a teen he thought he was extra cool if he did these activities without his shirt. So after he had his surgery with an orthopedic surgeon in green bay to remove the cancer on his face, neck, and shoulder I make sure he always has a good sunscreen with super high SPF (80-100) for soccer days, and a slightly lower on a daily basis. I know I have more sun freckles on my left arm and left side of my face from driving around town here in Arizona. So I’m going to fight and do the best I can to stay safe and keep my family protected.
My mom has almost perfect skin. Sure she has a few wrinkles now, but she stayed out of the sun most of her life which is saying something for growing up in Arizona. Her skin is never dry, it looks like porcelain, and I don’t see any age spots. Moving from Arizona to Oregon I’m sure helped her out as well since the sun isn’t out as commonly as Arizona, plus Oregon has a little humidity in the air to keep her skin dewy. Everytime I come back from a visit to Oregon my skin is soft and feels so much better. It starts to dry out again about 2 days after I come home. Mom always used Oil of Olay in the old glass bottles, and I remember the clean scent of it on her cheeks growing up. So when I started to take care of my skin I used Oil of Olay and have never looked back. I have been loyal to the Olay Total Effects SPF 15 7-in1 for the past decade. My skin always feels soft, was protected from the sun, and I could almost always find it at Costco in big packages with a semi annual coupon. (Remember I’m a bargain hunter.) I always kept an extra bottle in my cabinet. A couple years back I really started to learn how to use coupons and I tried a good dozen types of skin care, and nothing worked as well for me as the Olay 7-in-1. I recently received a sample of Clarins Super Restorative Daycream SPF 20 and I LOVED it, but look at the price on it. Almost $100. Yikes! So I’ll just pretend that my sample jar was just a vacation for my face when every last bit is gone, and go back to my trusty Olay which in my short absence now has SPF 30. Yeah! Olay Total Effects 7-in1 now with SPF 30. I am also devoted to exfoliating my face every morning with St. Ives Apricot Scrub in the shower. I like to have a smooth face to put my makeup on, and it’s under $4.00 almost everywhere. I love this stuff and always have a spare bottle under my cabinet as well.
A few years ago I stumbled on the Roc products (again Costco had a great deal), and I started to use their night cream. I actually saw improvement which I think is rare for over the counter skin products. Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream became my new nighttime cream. The retinol is a bit of a wrinkle eraser and a plumper for thinning aging skin, and I think should be in every girls medicine cabinet over 30. It doesn’t make you 20 again, but it does actually make a difference on my face. It plumped up my thinning skin on my forehead and sort of pushed my wrinkles back out like blowing air into a balloon. It did the same for my whole face including my eyes. I love this stuff. It doesn’t have the best scent and I shared a bottle of it with Linda, my other blogging sister, but she wouldn’t use it because of the scent. However for me the scent takes a backseat to the results and you only smell it for a few minutes when you put it on your face. Plus it doesn’t smell horrible, just not like cucumbers or rose petals. I would love for it to smell fruity, but I value it more for the results on my skin. Some people says it tingles when you start to use the product. It did for me as well, but only for a day or two and it didn’t hurt my skin at all, just a lite tingle.
So to answer my question, is beauty only skin deep? No. But taking care of the body and the skin you are in is important, and does improve your natural beauty. We need to drink at least 8-10 cups of water a day, eat fruit and veggies. I think that’s the #1 thing we can do for our skin. Eat an avocado once in a while which is good for your skin and hair. Always protect your skin from the sun or you will get age spots in your 40’s. That’s the #2 best thing to do for your skin. Age spots don’t look like cute little freckles, but like mud sprinkled on your face. #3 Blush can make you cheeks rosy, but so can a brisk walk to get your blood circulating.

I'm Shara, a wife, mother, bargain shopper, and I love to critique everything from food to mascara. I'm a sister of Colleen who lives in the desert of Arizona. My favorite time of day is when I pretend my kids are asleep upstairs, and I can catch up on my favorite shows with my handsome husband. Once Upon a Time, Dr. Who, Mythbusters (husband's choice), Big Bang Theory, Sherlock, and Castle. I turned 40 but feel around 30ish, and wonder where the time has gone. I love new clothes, new make-up, new food, and anything new to try out and critique. It's not mean, I promise, I just really like to figure out how to make things better :-)
