“I took hold of that scourge -filled ship and crushed it between my limbs, hurtling it into the second sun, the red one that gave me strength. But I was too late." Terraformer
Dear Teen Me,
The first thing you must know is that there is a fabulous guy waiting for you to find him so don’t worry about the drama of missing out on having a high school boyfriend or a date to the prom. Those things are not as important as meeting the right guy.
I have to add that your guy is awesome. He’s the handsome prince you were always hoping for—a friend you can rely on who will support you and love you. Someone you have so much in common with, you’ll wonder how you got so lucky. Just don’t give up on him when he gets cold feet early on in your dating.
Next, your parents are great. They’re not out to get you at all and they aren’t trying to make your life difficult or limit you in any way. Listen to their advice and nurture your relationships with them and with your brothers and sisters.
Enjoy being young. Try some new things that might be scary. Go sky-diving, learn how to snorkel, or go horseback riding. Join some clubs at school. Take a dance class. Learn martial arts. Staying as quiet as a mouse in the background is safe but it’s not for you. You have a great sense of humor so share it and let people get to know you.
Computers and the internet are very important in the future and are essential to your career (yes you will have a career) so take a class. Don’t worry about the D+ you got in typing class. You will use a keyboard every day and you’ll do just fine. No one needs to type 90 wpm in the future and nobody cares if you put that skill on your resume.
Instead of buying more New Kids on the Block memorabilia, save your money so you can buy a car that doesn’t break down constantly. I know you think the members of your favorite boy band might write you back or notice that you send them care packages but they really won’t and honestly you don’t need NKOTB marbles, trading cards, or puzzles.
I know you think you have no talents while everyone around you can sing, dance, draw, & paint but you have many other abilities that will be recognized and embraced by others. You’ll have the opportunity to travel extensively, to shake hands with people you admire, to be a part of another culture, and to see your thoughts and ideas become influential.
Now, the shocking news.
You won’t be able to have children.
I know that you weren’t planning on doing much other than being a wife and a mother and you might be wondering what the point of life is without kids. I won’t lie to you and say it’s going to be easy because it isn’t, but eventually you’ll work through it and realize you are a great aunt and you have a great job and you are going to be fine. You’ll have a very full, busy, and rewarding life and you’ll have your husband at your side.
The fantastic news is that if you wrote down a list of all your dreams and goals, I’ll bet you that I’ve already checked off most of them.
Enjoy each minute of your youth because teenage years don’t last very long. Before you know it you have be all responsible and grown up.
That’s it for now. I’ll let you get back to eating lunches by yourself and avoiding the popular crowd’s hallway so they won’t notice you. (I promise that someday none of that will matter.)
Love,
Your Future Self
