“I took hold of that scourge -filled ship and crushed it between my limbs, hurtling it into the second sun, the red one that gave me strength. But I was too late." Terraformer
Thoughts on Publishing
By
Colleen Houck
There is no feeling in the world like typing the last sentence of your first book. It’s a surprised delight that, interestingly enough, is almost unexpected. I remember thinking, ‘I did it! I actually did it! I didn’t think I could, but I did!’ It was a milestone for me. It opened a new chapter for me and pushed my career and my life in a new direction.
Not being able to have my own children, I’ve often wondered what my contribution to world would be. Who would I share my life experiences with? Will anyone remember me after my time on Earth is gone? Have I done anything to make the world different, if not better?
My maternal grandfather died when my mother was young. He was a cowboy, a surveyor, and a photographer. He also had a dream to write cowboy novels and finished a short one before he died. It was never published but I’d like to think he’d be proud and that he’d enjoy experiencing this wild ride with me.
So, in a way, my books have become my legacy. The fact that they’ve been appreciated by so many, that I was discovered by an agent and a film producer, and that I’ve found a wonderful team of great people who want to help me reach a wider audience is humbling. I am awestruck that so many people have come together so quickly and are even willing to pay me to do what I love.
My world has broadened into an international community of friends who have come to love my characters as much as I do. As I journey down this new path, I look forward to introducing more people to my tigers, getting out there to meet fans, and rolling up my sleeves to make my own mark on the Year of the Tiger.
