Thoughts on Publishing
Thoughts on Publishing By Colleen Houck There is no feeling in the world like typing the last sentence of your first book. It’s a surprised delight that, interestingly enough, is almost unexpected. I remember thinking, ‘I did it! I actually did it! I didn’t think I could, but I did!’ It was a milestone for me. It opened a new chapter for me and pushed my career and my life in a new direction. Not being able to have my own children, I’ve often wondered what my contribution to world would be. Who would I share my life experiences …
Grief
Grief by Colleen Houck Grief is perhaps one of the most complex of human emotions. It’s a thick, almost tangible feeling that runs from the back of your throat down to the pit of your stomach. It’s a kind of pain that’s wrapped in layers. On the surface, its sadness at the loss of the loved one, but it’s much more than that. It’s a hole that gets punched right in the center of your life. It’s trying to redirect your vision of the future to no longer include your loved one. Sometimes, it’s anger that they left unexpectedly. There’s …
Putting the Horse Before the Cart
Putting the Horse Before the Cart By Colleen Houck Anyone who has the determination to write a novel and is dedicated enough to actually accomplish that goal will have a natural desire to move their book into the next step of the writing process—publication. Of the many roads that lead to Rome why would an author pick the most rugged, undeveloped, pot-hole filled path? To put it simply, that often scoffed at byway is open to all comers brave enough to test its hazards. I’ve always loved books but I never felt the itch to put pen to paper …
If You Build It, He Will Come
If You Build It, He Will Come By Colleen Houck For a new writer, finding an agent sometimes feels like you’ve been sent on a snipe hunt. Other writers insist they are out there, tout the glories of bagging one, and share their wild adventure stories about when they got theirs. But are agents really out there? If so, how do you get one? I searched for an agent in the same way most people do—through trial and error querying. My queries improved over time. My book summaries got better. I learned more about how to get published as …
My Teen Crushes
My Teen Crushes by Colleen Houck Today’s teens have a lot of crush options both in Hollywood and in literature. I definitely carry a torch for Damon Salvatore and Edward Cullen. I’ve been known to swoon over certain X-Men, I’ve written gushing fan mail to boy bands, and I used to have posters of hunky heroes hung in my bedroom. Those carefully arranged pictures covered every square inch of space like sheets of sigh-inducing wallpaper. My big Hollywood crush as a teenager was Superman. Between his blue eyes, dark hair, and his taking Lois Lane on a romantic flight around …
Writing Advice
Writing Advice by Colleen Houck When I started writing, I created character cards using 3 x 5 cards. I scanned the internet for images of who I thought the character might look like, glued it to one side and wrote the full name of the character underneath. On the back I listed a bio not only the birthday but what kind of traits they had, what were their favorite foods, favorite books, etc. It helped a lot in my early writing. I write using images especially when I hit a block. I look up creepy monsters or graveyards and describe …
The Glamorous Life of an Author
The Glamorous Life of an Author By Colleen Houck Many people have the mistaken assumption that a writer’s life, while not quite up to Hollywood standards, is quite glamorous and full of business meetings in opulent high rises, private jets for worldwide tours, cashing huge checks, and sitting on a giant pile of fan mail as the letters you threw up in the air fall gently around you. While perhaps all of us indulge in the American dream of fame and fortune, there are easier ways to achieve it than by publishing a book. Being an author is perhaps one …

Walking Backwards on the Road to Success
Walking Backwards on the Road to Success By Colleen Houck I took a very strange road to making my book a bestseller. The expression, “There are many roads to Rome,” or “All roads lead to Rome,” can be interpreted in a couple of ways. The first is that the Roman Empire was so vast that no matter what road you were walking on, it probably belonged to Rome. It could also mean that there are many paths can lead to a successful outcome or another explanation could be that it doesn’t matter what you do or where you go, …
