“I took hold of that scourge -filled ship and crushed it between my limbs, hurtling it into the second sun, the red one that gave me strength. But I was too late." Terraformer
Kishan and Kelsey went on a date when they were at Port Blair waiting to head out to the volcano. I thought it was significant that she wasn’t wearing her ring.
The rest of the week flew by quickly and it became harder to feign excitement over my new status as a fiancée. When Kishan took me to dinner one evening, he picked up my hand and frowned. “Where’s your ring, Kelsey?”
“My ring? Oh, it’s here.” I pulled the amulet chain out from my shirt and showed him the shiny ring that I’d attached to it.
“Why don’t you wear it on your hand?”
“Well…I guess two reasons. I keep it on the chain because that’s the safest place for it to be. I’ll never forget it if it’s there.”
“What’s your other reason?”
“Honestly?”
He nodded.
“I don’t want it to upset Ren.”
“So the way Ren feels about it is more important than the way I feel?”
I squirmed in the chair and stalled while the waiter poured more water. After he left, I leaned forward and squeezed his hand. “No. It’s not that his feelings are more important, it’s just that, well, I’d like things to be smooth between the three of us until everything is resolved.”
He folded his arms across his chest. “So you don’t intend to tell him until this is all over?”
Wincing, I muttered, “I think he already knows.”
“How?”
“He was on the beach when you gave me the ring. He saw us.”
Kishan grunted. “I guess that explains why he’s not talking to me.”
I nodded and played with my dinner quietly, desperate to change the subject but not coming up with anything.
Kishan studied me silently. “There’s something else, isn’t there?”
“No.”
“Kelsey. You can tell me anything.” He paused for a moment but I didn’t volunteer any information. He sighed deeply. “I thought you’d be happy.”
I raised my eyes to his face. “Oh, I am.”
“You don’t seem like it.”
“I…it’s hard to be happy when it means saying goodbye.”
“To Ren?”
“To everyone. Nilima, India, and yes, Ren. It’s hard to picture a life without them. It’s hard enough that we just had to say goodbye to Mr. Kadam.” I wiped a tear that spilled despite my furious blinking to control my emotions.
“I see.”
He stopped asking questions and I ate a few more bites, though the food had no taste anymore. All of me felt numb including my taste buds. We soon left and Kishan was quiet on the walk home.
